Tomatoes

Tomatoes

Tomatoes come from Central America and like a warm climate so we grow them in the greenhouse. We have four plants for medium sized salad tomatoes and four for sweet cherry tomatoes - they just fit in your mouth!

Tomatoes are really a fruit because they have seeds inside.

We like tomatoes in salads and sandwiches. They also make very good chutney.

I've taken some pictures of them growing. Watch how things change as you go down the page. Click on the pictures to see bigger pictures!

We sowed Tomatoe seed in a tray in mid March. It was kept in the warm conservatory to germinate and at the end of March the seedings were transferred to pots.

When the plants are about 20cms high they are transferred to the greenhouse.

Here they are in the greenhouse in mid May

By early June they had started flowering and the first green tomatoes could be seen.
