Runner Beans

Runner beans

Runner beans should be in everybody's garden. They are easy to grow, they don't take up much space, have pretty red flowers, freeze well and taste delicious.

They are similar to the climbing beans but have a flat pod not a round one and are better in cold weather. The pods grow bigger too.

I've taken some pictures of them growing. Watch how things change as you go down the page. Click on the pictures to see bigger pictures!

We sow the beans in pots in May and keep them warm while they germinate.

In early June we put them out in the garden in rows. The runner beans are the row on the left.

Later they will produce red flowers and then lots of beans from late July until September.
