Redcurrants

Redcurrants

We have three redcurrant bushes near the entrance to the fruit cage. Redcurrants are similar to blackcurrants but they are sweeter and ripen earlier. We make redcurrent jelly from them.

I've taken some pictures of them changing through the year.

Watch them grow as you go down the page and click on the pictures to see bigger pictures!

Here they are in the middle of March.

Redcurrants in March

There are no leaves yet. Can you see the manure I have put all around the bottom?

By the end of March the buds are just appearing.

By the end of April there are lots of leaves and some flowers.

The berries were almost full size by the middle of May, but still very green.
